Special Education Dilemmas for Children and Families Experiencing Divorce Presented by Beth Kurkoski, Tanya W. Pellettiere, Ph.D. and Francis Riso, LMSW Wednesday, November 29, 2023, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM Virtual Attendance: ZOOM Learning Objective: Families experiencing separation, divorce, or custody issues can present unique challenges for schools when trying to meet special education needs for the children. Join us to explore this difficult and emotional landscape as we focus on what is best for the child when there is familial disagreement. Presenters: Beth Kurkoski: Beth has been practicing divorce mediation since 2001, doing business as Divorce Mediation Services of the Southern Tier. Beth has received certifications in the following areas of mediation: Special Education, Family Court (Custody, Visitation and Child Support), Department of Labor, and Divorce Mediation. She has developed and implemented Peer Mediation in 11 area schools. Beth has provided mediation and conflict resolution to law enforcement officers, school personnel, students, public assistance recipients, and jail inmates. Tanya Pellettiere, Ph.D.: Tanya W. Pellettiere, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist experienced working in county mental health, a residential treatment center, a school, a university, a hospital, and in private practice. She currently works for the NY State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Pellettiere has spent a lot of professional time with children that struggle with anxiety but has worked with families that have struggled with a variety of challenges, including divorce and separation. Dr. Pellettiere is a certified mediator and parenting expert. Francis Riso: Social worker currently employed at Helping Celebrate Abilities in Johnson City, NY; professional responsibilities include providing Article 16 mental health counseling, in-home Family Support Services, and assisting CPSE faculty to support students and families in navigating local resources.
